Crystal Tree Forest

A crystal forest, nocturnal and poetic. Probably the scene that best embodies my style, and one of the most beautiful I've ever created.

The Story

This scene is part of the same creative challenge run by my streamer and illustrator friend. The theme of this one: crystal. And what better than a crystal forest?

It spoke to me immediately. I don't really know why this theme inspires me so much, but the idea came very naturally, like a happy accident. I wanted to compose something deeper than Flower Forest or The Lighthouse. To reconnect with that nocturnal tone and atmosphere that The Hourglass carried, but taking it further.

It's probably the scene that best represents my style. What I managed to create out of this theme still makes me extremely proud today.

Under the Hood

I built the scene on Unreal Engine, all assets modelled in low poly. But this one brought its own first, like every project: for the trees and plants, I no longer used complex models, but Blender's hair system.

That technology lets you attach planes onto branches and surfaces, and through modifiers, generate trees that look lush and highly visual. It required me to draw the shape of the leaves and plants myself. A major challenge, and a genuine revelation.

The Wall

The wall was managing to create something beautiful out of plane-based assets (PNGs), and above all making the whole composition blend harmoniously. Moving from solid models to this foliage technique meant completely rethinking my approach.

Getting these simpler elements to coexist while keeping a rich and coherent scene, that was the real challenge.

What I'm Proud Of

My greatest pride is that by composing the scene this way, I gained enormous performance: very lightweight models in place of complex ones. Then, through blueprints, I set up a gradient system and a light reflection effect on the leaves and plants.

The result: that distinctive crystalline effect, a pastel ambient light, volumetric fog. An atmosphere that's simply incredible. I'll say it again without false modesty: it's clearly one of the most beautiful scenes I've created to this day.

What I Learned

Crystal Tree Forest taught me something about myself, more than about technique. I understood that I work very much on intuition. That my creativity comes first from my feeling, not from external inspiration. And that it's precisely when I let myself be carried by that instinct that I accomplish my most beautiful things.

It's a lesson that goes beyond this project: it taught me to trust my own creative voice.

Today

Like the other challenge scenes, this one is finished, and won't be developed further.

But it holds a special place in my journey. It's the peak of my challenge period, the moment my style reached its full expression. A crystal forest frozen in the night, born from a simple intuition, and become one of my greatest sources of pride.
